DATE: Archaeological Revival, c.1890 

A fantastic authentic tetradrachm (coin), depicting Alexander The Great with his famous lion pelt of Heracles. On the reverse, Zeus enthroned holding an eagle and sceptre. The coin dates from 330 BC and remains in excellent condition. The coin is set within an archaeological revival style brooch fitting. The craftmanship is excellent, and is crafted in 18k yellow gold with light marks for Philipps Brothers & Sons. Dates from the 1890's. 

Alexander the Great was an ancient Macedonian ruler and one of history’s greatest military minds who, as King of Macedonia and Persia, established the largest empire the ancient world had ever seen. Alexander III was born in Pella, Macedonia, in 356 B.C. to King Philip II and Queen Olympias—although legend had it his father was none other than Zeus, the ruler of the Greek gods. In 336 B.C., Alexander’s father Philip was assassinated by his bodyguard, and at just 20 years old, Alexander claimed the Macedonian throne and killed his rivals. Coins were made similar to Hercules/Heracles and Alexander portrayed himself as the hero wearing the lion’s skin as a helmet.
